Tummy Tucks After a C-Section: What You Need to Know

After pregnancy, many women are bothered by their C-section scars and elect to have a tummy tuck as part of their mommy makeoverto remove stretched skin and scarring, and regain their pre-pregnancy body. But how soon do you have to wait and what should you expect?

Below, we’ve answered some of the top questions we hear from recent mothers regarding getting a tummy tuck after a C-Section:

Tummy Tucks After a C-Section FAQ’s

Is it Safe to Get a Tummy Tuck After a C-Section?

Most women who ask this question are familiar with the C-Tuck, the combination of a cesarean section birth and tummy tuck immediately after the surgery made popular by celebrities a few years ago. Most surgeons would advise against this combination for three reasons:

1. Surgical Complications- All surgeries have risks, and combining surgeries increases the potential for these complications. Chance of infection, blood clots, and fluid retention are all increased risks when undergoing abdominal and uterus surgeries.

2. Difficult Recovery– recovering from both surgeries at the same time can be difficult for your body and the lifestyle as a new mom

3. Unsatisfactory Results- During your nine months of pregnancy, your abdominal skin stretches. This distortion can make it difficult for a surgeon to accurately determine how much skin tightening to perform immediately after you gave birth. If you rush your tummy tuck, you run the risk of it not living up to its full potential.

How Soon After a C-Section Can You Have a Tummy Tuck?

As discussed above, you should not have a tummy tuck procedure until your body has completely healed from the C-section, and has returned to pre-pregnancy weight and normal metabolism. Prior to and the months after giving birth, your weight, hormone and blood levels will fluctuate. In order to have the best results, you want your body to be back to normal.

Also, if you’re planning to have more children in the future, you may want to hold off on the tummy tuck until after your last pregnancy.

What Are My Tummy Tuck Options?

Traditionally there are two different types of tummy tuck procedures you can elect to have depending on your body composition:

Full Tummy Tuck – Most popular for post c-section bellies, recent moms choose this option to flatten the whole belly and remove c-section scar.  If you have excess skin and/or stretchmarks above the belly button, this would likely be your best option.  A full tummy tuck may be combined with liposuction.

Mini Tummy Tuck – Best suited for moms already in their ideal weight range before pregnancy & who have lost their pregnancy weight. This procedure focuses solely on the lower abdomen and may also be combined with liposuction.

How Can a Tummy Tuck After Pregnancy Benefit Me?

New moms who have completely healed from their c-section pregnancy can look forward to many benefits from a full or mini tummy tuck including:

  • Removal of excess skin
  • Repair separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Removal of abdominal stretch marks & scars
  • Contour your waist
  • More clothing choices
