What Are The Injection-Related Side Effects Of JUVÉDERM®?

Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness and or bleeding/bruising. The mild redness and swelling at the injection site is temporary.

Why Should I Consider JUVÉDERM®?

As you age, your skin loses HA resulting in facial wrinkles and folds, like those “parentheses” lines around your mouth. Juvederm can also be used to enhance the lips, improving the definition of the lip lines or adding more volume. Talk with Dr. Garcia to find out if Juvederm is for you.

What Is JUVÉDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® is a non-surgical filler, made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid (HA), used by Dr. Garcia to smooth lines and enhance lips. HA is a naturally occurring substance found in your skin. As you age, you start to lose HA, which causes the skin to lose structure and volume, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds.

How Can I Reduce My Risks Of Bleeding Or Bruising From JUVÉDERM®?

Bruising is an expected side effect of any injectable procedure. Here are a few tips to help minimize your bruising risk:

  • One week prior to injections avoid the following medications/supplements: aspirin, NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin etc.), St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, Multivitamins, Krill Oil, Fish Oils, Flaxseed Oils, Omega-3, Gingko, Ginseng, Garlic and Glucosamine. *Consult your primary care physician before discontinuing any normally prescribed medication.
  • Eat FRESH pineapple twice a day for two days as it contains bromelain that has been known to decrease bruising. You can also take bromelain supplements 2 weeks prior to injections.
  • No alcohol consumption 2 days prior to injections
  • Dr. Garcia also recommends taking Arnica Montana for 3-5 days prior to your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling. We recommend 4 tablets, four times a day.

Do not use Arnica if you have active heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are taking Coumadin, Lovenox, Heparin, or Xarelto. If you have a medical condition that affects clotting or are on a medication which affects bloods clotting, you must get your primary care doctor’s approval before taking arnica.
